Write to your MSP, MP or Councillor

Contact your MSP, MP or Councillor to let them know that you care about the future of the Screen Machine service.

What do I say?

A hand-written letter is more powerful than one that is typed, or an e-mail. Write in your own words, and include your own thoughts and experiences.

We suggest that you cover the following:

  • Screen Machine is the cinema for the Highlands & Islands of Scotland, bringing mainstream cinema releases to communities where there is little or no other cultural provision. For 25 years it has been regularly visiting 40+ communities, from Arran to Orkney.
  • The future of the service beyond April 2024 is under threat. Our old cinema is no longer fit for purpose, and the lease agreement on the cinema we are currently using expires in April 2024. Renewing it isn’t possible, but even if we did this would not secure the long-term future of the service, which can only be achieved by building a brand new cinema.
  • Without significant funding to place an order for a new cinema, the Screen Machine service will cease.
  • The Scottish Government should provide at least 50% of the funding for a new Screen Machine, which is expected to cost £1.4 million in total. This will enable us to place an order, proceed with the build (which could take a year to 18 months to complete) and fundraise for the balance.
  • The Screen Machine service already helps cut carbon emissions. But a new hydrogen battery-operated Screen Machine will do much more for the environment – it will be an exemplar of green energy, seeing the service fit for the future.
  • The Screen Machine service is for everyone, from aged one to 101. It hosts screenings for schools, for groups with additional needs, it is wheelchair accessible and has facilities for the deaf/hard of hearing. It is a vital community asset.
