Screen Machine service will return to more islands

  • Specially designed rollers have been fitted to the Cinémobile, which will enable it to visit more communities.
  • Screen Machine is again able to visit the Isles of Cumbrae, Gigha, Eigg and Shapinsay, and also Lochaline.

Regional Screen Scotland, the operator and manager of the Screen Machine mobile cinema service, are delighted to announce that the cinema is be able to visit four more islands, and one mainland location, which have not been visited for at least 12 months. We are very grateful to FirstStage Studios for their generous financial support to enable this modification to be made to the Cinémobile.

Simon Drysdale, Interim Chief Executive Officer of Regional Screen Scotland, said:

“Since April 2023, we have been using a leased cinema – the Cinémobile. It has different dimensions to our previous cinema, which was tailor-made to negotiate Scotland’s ferries. Sadly, these different dimensions meant that certain locations could not be reached. This problem has been largely solved by working with the Cinémobile’s owners, Toutenkamion, to design rollers for the rear of the cinema trailer, which will enable it to negotiate more slip ways with greater ease. We are enormously grateful to FirstStage Studios for funding this important change to our cinema.”

Screen Machine is now able to visit 19 different islands. Unfortunately, despite this modification, it remains unable to visit the Isles of Jura, Raasay and Rousay.

Tickets for visits to the following locations will go on sale soon:

Isle of Gigha – 23 and 24 July
Millport, Isle of Cumbrae – 29 to 31 July
Isle of Eigg – 25 and 26 August

On 14 March, Regional Screen Scotland announced that Screen Scotland have provided funding to extend the lease of the Cinémobile by two years, to April 2026. This provides time to fundraise for £1.4 million for the cost of a new Screen Machine which will be built to our own specifications. The build will take 12 to 18 months to complete. We urge our customers and supporters to write to their elected representatives to tell them that the Screen Machine service must be saved.
