New toolkit to help local cinemas make their case

A new online ‘toolkit’ has been launched to help local cinemas across the UK to make the case for how much they matter to their communities, by measuring and understanding their social impacts. Your Cinema, Your Community, Your Impact is published by Regional Screen Scotland, the national agency which works to increase access to the big screen experience, and has been compiled by the Glasgow-based Social Value Lab.
Regional Screen Scotland and Social Value Lab previously collaborated on the report Your Cinema, Your Community, issued in July 2016, which was one of the most substantial surveys ever conducted into the social value of local and community cinema, drawing on some 3500 responses from audience members of twelve very different local cinemas across Scotland, including Regional Screen Scotland’s own Screen Machine mobile cinema.
Robert Livingston, Director of Regional Screen Scotland, said:
“The new Toolkit is based on the findings of our earlier report, and offers a range of methods and resources to any kind of group or venue which screens films, to measure the wider impacts of what they do. These methods will also help them to understand how they are viewed by their audiences and the community in which they’re based.”
The 12 venues which took part in the original report ranged from a film society in Orkney to a four-screen family-run commercial cinema in the Scottish Borders, and included multi-arts venues and restored historic cinemas. The Toolkit is therefore relevant to an equally wide range of cinemas and screening venues, from those run wholly by volunteers to those owned and managed by Local Authorities and Culture and Leisure Trusts.
The Toolkit covers such areas as:
• Participation: who’s coming to your screenings; from how far away; how representative are they of the wider local population?
• Satisfaction: what do audiences think of your choice of films, of how they’re greeted, of the comfort and ambience of your venue?
• Outcomes: what impact is your venue having on Wellbeing, the Local Economy, Heritage and the Environment, young people, old people?

In plain and straightforward language the Toolkit offers a range of surveying and measuring methods, and includes a number of survey and questionnaire templates. You can open the Toolkit here.
