Pentland Ferries helps Screen Machine return to Orkney

Screen Machine, Scotland’s mobile cinema, will be returning to Orkney twice in 2014. Thanks to help   from Pentland Ferries the 80-seat state-of-the-art mobile cinema will visit Sanday, Westray, Stronsay and Hoy in April/May and again in the autumn.

Ginnie Atkinson, interim Director of Regional Screen Scotland, said,

“At Regional Screen Scotland we are committed to ensuring that remote and rural communities have access to the cinema experience, where otherwise they would have a long journey to the cinema or not be able to go at all. The Screen Machine is a well-loved visitor to locations all over Highlands and Islands region and we are delighted to be able to return to Orkney on a special visit made possible by the generosity of Pentland Ferries who have assisted with the ferry costs for this special vehicle.”

 Andrew Banks, Managing Director of Pentland Ferries, said,

“Every day we help hundreds of passengers make the journey across the Pentland Firth to Orkney. We are delighted to be welcoming Screen Machine aboard the MV Pentalina twice during 2014 and playing a part in bringing movie magic to Orcadians on Sanday, Westray, Stronsay and Hoy”.

  • Screen Machine is an 80-seat, air-conditioned modern mobile cinema. It is equipped with state-of-the-art 3D digital projection and Dolby Digital surround sound.
  • Pentland Ferries offers regular crossings across the Pentland Firth from Gill’s Bay to St Margaret’s Hope. With the crossing taking just under one hour, it is the shortest and quickest sea route for cars and passengers. Full details on services can be found at
  • Dates for the visit are: Sanday (25 and 26 April), Westray (28 and 29 April), Stronsay (30 April and 1 May), Hoy (2 and 3 May). Screen Machine will be showing The LEGO Movie, Frozen, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Twenty Feet From Stardom and Cuban Fury.
  • Screen Machine visits approx 40 different communities in, in Orkney, Argyll and Bute, Highland, North Ayrshire, Moray and the Western Isles. It visits each community on average four times per year, stays for between one and four days, and screens at least two different films per visit.  Screen Machine also appears at selected film festivals.
  • In June 2013 Screen Machine Sanday, Westray, Stronsay and Hoy for the first time in over 10 years.
  • Screen Machine is financially supported by Creative Scotland, Highlands & Islands Enterprise and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. Screen Machine is sponsored by Royal Bank of Scotland. Screen Machine’s 15th anniversary activities are sponsored by Highland Fuels.
