Director: Gillies Mackinnon
Cast: Kevin Guthrie, Ellie Kendrick, Gregor Fisher, Sean Biggerstaff, Naomi Battrick, Eddie Izzard

Remake of a 1949 Ealing classic, which has become possibly Scotland’s best-loved and best-known film, tells the real-life story of the SS Politician, the 8,000 ton cargo ship which, during the War, was heading for Jamaica and New Orleans with 24,000 cases of whisky. But a gale struck, running she ship aground off the coast of a fictional Hebridean island. The tale of how the locals raided the wreck for its consignment of whisky has become legend. Eddie Izzard plays Captain Waggett, the Home Office guard who wants to prevent looting and orders that all the islanders homes must be searched.

This re-make, by the respected director Gillies (Regeneration, Hideous Kinky) Mackinnon boasts charming performances from Gregor Fisher as Joseph Macroon and Eddie Izzard as Captain Waggett, as well as from a host of other characters in the story, in particular James Cosmo as the hellfire preacher and John Sessions as the doctor. A celebration of cameraderie and ingenuity.

“What makes the film so pleasurable is the humour and lyricism with which it tells it’s rousing story” Independent

“The gentle, subversive wit of the 1949 version has been left intact” The Times
