Victoria and Abdul

Costume drama from Stephen Frears (Philomena, The Queen) about the extraordinary friendship between the ageing Queen Victoria and her handsome young Muslim attendant. Plucked from his position as a prison clerk in Uttar Pradesh, Abdul was selected to present Her Maj with a ceremonial coin at Victoria’s Golden Jubilee banquet. Meanwhile, Victoria is a jaded widow of some 16 years. Could the handsome Abdul provide the delight and novelty she so needs? Partly shot in the Cairngorms – Victoria takes Abdul to the loch-side both where she had met with John Brown – their deepening friendship causes consternation among her courtiers, and her elder son, Bertie, in particular. “sensational performance from Dench” Telegraph “provides a National Treasure with a second chance to achieve a Victorian Oscar victory” Empire
