Synopsis

This sparkling romantic drama is set during the Second World War. It’s the Blitz and the country’s morale is at its lowest ebb. The Government’s Ministry of Information needs to find a way of inspiring everyone to play their part in winning the war – particularly women who are needed to work in factories and grow vegetables. Struggling to find the right tone, the MoI hires a young, female copywriter to bring a much-needed feminine perspective to their scripts. “Obviously we can’t pay you as much as the chaps” Catrin Cole (played by Gemma Arterton) is told during her job interview, and that’s just one of the many sexist swipes she has to deal with.

There to write what’s termed ‘the slop’ (otherwise known as dialogue between two female characters), Catrin soon finds herself working on a film about the Dunkirk evacuation which will rally the country’s spirits and to persuade the US to enter the War alongside its allies.

The film successfully treads a sensitive path between being very funny but set in a bleak period of human history.

“One of the smartest, funniest and most surprising movies I’ve seen in years” Wall Street Journal

“Gemma Arterton shines in a big hearted and witty drama”
The Observer
