Synopsis

When a man is shipwrecked on a desert island, repeated attempts to sail away only bring him into contact with a mysterious giant red turtle. They develop a unique friendship and slowly the man adapts to life on the island.

If you are familiar with the work of Studio Ghibli, then you will know to expect beautiful images that may stay with you forever. But this is also the Japanese studio’s first co-production, with a Dutch company, and so the look is very different – the figures have the simplicity of the Tintin books. Nonetheless, the depiction of the tropical island and all its life is wonderfully rich and immersive. Possibly not a film for very young children, but there may be no more beautiful film on our screens this year.
