The Illusionist – Expanded Cinema

PG
See it, smell it, taste it. Screen Machine brings you our first ever Expanded Cinema experience with this screening of the beautiful 2010 animation, The Illusionist, made in Scotland, by a French director working here, and involving the work of many Scottish illustrators. There are lots of added sensory experiences to bring the film to life – from Paris in 1959 to the tastes and smells of a Scottish island. This highly acclaimed animation is a love-letter to Scotland and tells the story of a French vaudeville magician, who finds himself out of work and tries his luck in Britain. Finally reaching a remote Scottish island, he meets a young woman who believes that he really can do magic. Devoted to him, she follows him to the Edinburgh, gloriously depicted in the 1950s. But his extravagant gifts to her soon drive him into debt, and the girl falls in love with their handsome young neighbour. There are plenty lovely comic moments in this charming, gently melancholy film. We have been working with New Media Scotland on this unique production. Stimulating your senses throughout the screening with bespoke flavours and fragrances for you to enjoy in sync with the film will be Scent Technician Ericka Duffy. We are delighted to have worked with local producers on Arran to put together the pack of items to eat, drink and smell. The pack will contain alcohol and dairy items, but a non-alcoholic alternative will be available. The Illusionist has a PG cert, only those aged 18 or over will be provided with a pack containing alcohol. Screen Machine’s refurbishment has been carried out by a France-based team, so we hope that you will agree that this very special screening of The Illusionist is a fitting way to celebrate our Alliance. “Bittersweet, moving and utterly beautiful: a love letter to cinema and to Scotland.” Empire “an exquisite, gently comic and elegiac film” Observer
