Queen of Glory

Queen of Glory is the story of Sarah Obeng, a brilliant lecturer and PhD student who quits Colombia University to follow her married lover to Ohio. When her mother dies suddenly, she bequeaths her daughter a Christian bookshop in the Bronx where Sarah was raised. Neither wanting it nor understanding it, Sarah plans to close down the bookshop. But the more time she spends there the more she realises that the bookshop is a community institution which must be saved.

A follow-up on the classic immigrant’s tale, Queen of Glory provokes laughter and empathy, as its heroine is reborn through her inheritance. This is a charming comedy about families and the expectations that mothers in particular can place on their daughters.

Screen Machine is delighted to be screening Queen of Glory as part of the Reel Roots: Black History Month. It has been curated by The New Black Film Collective with support from Film Hub Scotland, and offers bold films that speak to strength in the Black experience, with a focus on inspirational lives.

“Remember the name Nana Mensah — as an actor, writer and director, Queen Of Glory is a hugely impressive calling card.” Empire
