Our Island 2021: Creatively Exploring Gigha

U

Free but ticketed event. Doors will open at 7.10pm and the film will begin at 7.20pm.

As 2021 dawned the world was once again in lockdown. On Gigha, it meant for an even quieter winter as all normal activities ceased and the community retreated into their own homes.

With the help of funding from the Scottish Government’s Creative Communities programme, the community was able to come together in different ways to explore what it meant to live on Gigha and be an islander and in doing so, find new ways to be creative. Over the winter and into the spring stories and experiences were gathered and re-told, a new Gaelic song was commissioned and learnt by some. Through old photographs and new ones, the past and present were re-connected. Others wrote music, the children created an animation and sea shanty, others learnt new skills and through a storyblanket project a lasting legacy of crafted stories was created.

Throughout it all a film was being created, the telling of the story of being an islander during a moment in time, which reflects the deeper connections islanders old and new have with the island and its stories.

Our Island 2021 has enabled the people of Gigha to share stories and experiences, expertly and sensitively captured and curated by Oban based film makers Aye Glas.
