Italian ex-racer Enzo Ferrari is at the crossroads in the summer of 1957. He is reeling from the untimely death of his son Dino, which has added difficulties to his already-strenuous marriage to his wife Laura, while he struggles with the acknowledgement of another son with his mistress. On top of it all, the car company he started with Laura is verging on bankruptcy.
Always the competitor, Ferrari is not the kind to back down. He enters his racing team into the Mille Miglia, a gruelling and treacherous 1000-mile contest across Italy, knowing that second place is not an option.
Adam Driver transforms under the direction of Michael Mann (The Last of the Mohicans, Heat) in this intense character study of one of motor racing’s most reserved pioneers. Penelope Cruz gives an energetic and capricious performance as his wife Laura.
“a supple, elegant film, the kind of picture you’d expect from a vigorous craftsman like Mann” TIME
“Ferrari really is like a ’70s movie. It has that intensity of grip, that layered human fascination, that cathartic honesty about what life is really about.” Variety
“Driver’s performance is a fine one, flanked ever by emotional guardrails even in stressed-out moments… But Cruz hijacks the wheel from her co-star in a grief-dazed but always alert and forceful turn.” IndieWire
