Synopsis

It’s Berlin in 1940, and an ordinary couple, Anna and Otto Quangel have learned that their only son has been killed on the battlefield. They channel their grief into small but very dangerous acts of rebellion to resist the Nazi regime. These take the form of postcards, left around the city, with slogans such as “Mother! The Fuhrer has murdered my son” and “Stop the war machine” But as the cards are handed over to the authorities, the Gestapo are soon on the Quangels’ tracks.

This adaptation of Hans Fallada’s best-selling novel, Every Man Dies Alone, is based on a true story. It’s an understated story about heroism, with a great cast led by Emma Thompson.
