Dr Valentine and Sister Gilpin work at Bethlehem Hospital in West Yorkshire, taking care of its medley of geriatric patients. ‘The Beth’, as it’s so lovingly called by everyone, looks to administer more than just medicine, but embrace the people and life itself. But when NHS spending cuts threaten to close The Beth, staff, patients, and locals spring into action to save their beloved infirmary, all while they try to continue their unique methods of care.

Based on the play by Alan Bennett, and adapted by Call the Midwife’s Heidi Thomas, this drama stars an ensemble cast playing a range of endearing and idiosyncratic characters. Scattered with plenty of humour, it champions life itself and shows how a caring institution, no matter how small, can have a positive effect on a community and its people.

“a tightly played, witty, funny and provocative drama, with one of the year’s best twists” The Times

“A gently eccentric, periodically contrived but sneakily dark and seething comedy-drama about looking out for each other in a casually cruel world.” TheWrap

“Wry, sly and rousing” Daily Telegraph
