FALL OF THE PEACOCK THRONE

'Fall of the Peacock Throne' is Wildbird’s new production about the 1953 CIA coup in Iran, that replaced the democratic government with a brutal dictatorship in support of UK oil interests and so called 'free world' security.

What Ghandi is to India or Mandela is to Africa, Mossadeq is to the Middle East, yet few in the West have even heard of him; an inconveniently honourable and principled leader swept under the carpet of history in order to maintain the West’s false image of itself as a just and tolerant force for good. This is a story everyone should know that has timeless echos resounding and rebounding into the past, present, and future.

The play is epic in its reach but intimate in its design and execution, with stunning multi media imagery and an evocative and haunting soundscape. It tells one of the most sensational yet little known stories of the 20th century and deals with issues of conscience, empire, freedom, and above all, power. The production challenges the audience to see themselves as others see them, stripped of the filter of our national myths and moral self justifications, leaving only the raw truth that lies beneath.

The play weaves together the sinister noir textures of the coup story with the technicolor epic adventure of Alexander the Great's invasion of Iran in 336BC.  The two plots inform each other and challenge the moral shades of grey that lie at the heart of these two world changing events. Taken together this is the true story that lies at the root of Islamic terror and puts the current middle east and Caucasian conflicts into their proper historic and political context.

'Very impressive—a gripping piece of writing and an ambitious and effective production' - Robert Livingston

Following two showcase performances in Lossiemouth on 5th 6th September, we are now looking to take the production to studio scale venues around the UK with a reputation for innovative and challenging programmes in May and June 2009. The cost of each performance is £500 (negotiable)
