UHI Centre for History lecture series - NEW!

21st – 24th July, 2008

The UHI Lunchtime Lectures

Last year, the UHI centre for History ran an exceptional series of public lectures lasting one week at lunchtime each day.   Launched by the First Minister Alex Salmond, they were a phenomenal success with each lecture filling to capacity, with many having to stand at the back of the room or watch by video-conference from another room or location.   This year, the UHI presents another set of lectures to stir the imagination and early booking is  thoroughly recommended, as space is limited!

Monday 21st July:        Dr Karen Cullen, Programme Leader of UHI’s BA (Hons) Scottish History, will deliver a lecture about witchcraft and charming

Tuesday 22nd July:      Professor Paul Dukes, Emeritus Professor at the University of Aberdeen, will give a lecture entitled about the Scots in Russia.

Wednesday 23rd July: Dr David Worthington, Lecturer in History at the University of Aberdeen, will talk about Scots in Poland in a lecture about the Scots in early Modern Poland

Thursday 24th July:     Professor Chris Morris, a renowned expert in Early Medieval archaeology, will deliver a lecture about the Vikings’ relationship with Christianity in the British Isles and North Atlantic region

History – a truly gripping subject and the key to understanding how our country and our world, are the way they are today.   Recently, people from Poland and the rest of Eastern Europe have been moving into the Highlands. But did you know that movement was once in the other direction – with thousands of Scots settling in Poland and in countries further east?   And what were the Highlands like in the era of the Vikings? Or when witchcraft and magic were everywhere taken for granted?   This exceptional programme of FREE lectures, organised by the UHI Millennium Institute’s Centre for History, is your chance to get a glimpse of how things used to be – a glimpse, too, of why our BA Honours degree course in Scottish History, led by the Centre for History, is attracting so many students.

These lectures will take place at UHI Executive Office from 12.30pm – 1.30pm each day from 21st – 24th July.   To book a place, contact Paul Ellison on tel: 01463 279344 or email: Paul.Ellison@uhi.ac.uk
