- Why does it visit a particular place? - The Screen Machine has targets set for ticket sales. We have to be popular to secure funding. Our budget is worked around a projected income from ticket sales. In order to meet these targets we need to go to towns and villages where we feel that we can sell at least 50 seats per show. The current circuit is not set in stone however and we are always willing to explore new locations if there is an audience for movies. We need about 100 ticket sales over two evening screenings to make a visit to a particular location sustainable financially. We can also trial a location if we can secure a “guarantee against loss” on box office sales. This may come from a local authority or any funding agency. This can help bring the Screen Machine to any area which is small and remote and doesn’t have the population to deliver 100 ticket sales. In the past this “guarantee against loss” has taken the Screen Machine to the Outer Isles of Orkney and Colonsay It all comes down to money.
On the one hand the Screen Machine is a service that brings movies to remote locations; on the other hand we need to sell a certain amount of tickets to continue operating. We pick locations based on their size, proximity to existing cinemas (at least one hour by car to the nearest cinema is the closest we get), natural centres of population and the ability to deliver an audience that meets out sales targets.
