Scottish Emigration Museum Consultation - NEW!

Life of Carnegie

The Scottish Emigration Museum is an ambitious new museums, libraries and archives partnership project which aims to provide the global community with a unique, authoritative and inspirational collection of Scottish emigration related material in partnership with key Diaspora countries.

Museums Galleries Scotland (formerly the SMC) has been working closely with National Archives of Scotland, National Library of Scotland and National Museums Scotland on the preliminary development stages of the project.  The proposed Scottish Emigration Museum will draw on a broad spectrum of materials including records, objects, archival images, oral histories etc. to tell the story of Scottish Emigration and the lasting legacy on societies throughout the world.  It will go beyond the dry facts and engage users on an emotional level, offering a passionate account of the emigration experience including famous Scots and entire communities.  The outline project summary is below.

Phase One Consultation
Whilst the MGS  are now finished in the round of face-to-face consultations, they will still welcome comments and observations from those potential stakeholders in the heritage sector. With emigration having been such an important factor in the history and development of the HIghlands and Islands, it seems certain that there will be many in the Heritage North area with a vested interest here.
