The aim of the project was to stimulate interest in all aspects of the music business, and to encourage students to explore their own capabilities and aspirations in contemporary music. The mainstay of the project was a session with the Musicians Union Workshop band, five professional musicians with an extensive background in working with well known recording artists. The band performed a short programme of songs, and each member talked about the experience of working as a professional musician. They then spent a portion of the day working with smaller groups, offering advice on vocal techniques, guitar styles and so on. HI~Arts also produced a short training film to accompany the project, that allowed participating schools to see the band in session.
In addition to the band workshops, a team of industry professionals visited schools or youth groups to discuss career options, basic elements of copyright and publishing, and to help with any questions about starting a band or getting new music heard. The members of the panel were carefully chosen from a range of individuals who not only have specialist knowledge in their own field but also a broad understanding of the music industry in Scotland.
