International Artists Workshop - Artist Nicola Gear (Scotland)

Artist's Statement

"My work is often installed in public not specifically art spaces; a performance on a pedestrian bridge over the Clyde, an installation on a public transport system and pavements in Johannesburg, a garage in London.  My work explores boundaries between public and private space and also, storytelling and how mundane objects come to contain memories.  I use both traditional and digital media: drawing, brass rubbing, sound and performance.  I work alternately between the isolation of my studio, and working with other people within their context."

I have been recording the cuckoo, it follows everywhere, even calling at night. I had only seen one once before coming to Tanera... suddenly I see them everywhere, they have a territory that seems to surround the house I stay in, they sit in the trees, sometimes two at a time calling... the bay below seems to act as an amplifier.

As I have been recording the cuckoo and playing the sound back, stories of the cuckoo have been accumulating. They seem to have been amassing as the days go by, the more that are told, the more connections, conflicting and curious are stumbled upon. I was always told that you could call a cuckoo in by calling, well these cuckoos come from all round the globe...

No troot, but still-twitching mackerel and lithe delivered slippery from the sea - as 'greim cubhaige', an early morsel to be taken before you hear the day's first cuckoo, and so ward of a year's bad luck.
And the wee, foolish birds that follow the cuckoos? 'Gocans'. Their wee, pert, conceited, human counterparts abound.
See you all tomorrow/later today.

Hi Nicki, Greetings from Stromness. Very envious of the art craic and weather you all seem to be enjoying. Be sure to spread the word about the inspiration to be had the hands of a humble spoot and of course the creative merits of communal dance after hunter gather activity. With you in spirit. Body stuck in banana market purgatory. Regards to all. Puck x
PS Achiltibuie Smokehoose and Ian Muir do a good line in fly caught troot....and your Shetlander is pretty handy wae a sillock wand.

Hope all goes well on the island. Very quiet here in Balmore....
Peter and the rest of sailors managed to reach the mythical island of St Kilda this week and they've had good weather!!
They'll be unbearable when they get back. If they call in and visit on Friday 15th, be prepared for 6 big smelly, sunburned and unshaven guys.
Have fun. See you next week
Big Hugs
Jean xx
