Frequently asked questions

What is Heritage North?

Heritage North is a website project  for the broad heritage sector in the Highlands and Islands, established by HI-Arts, the cultural development agency for the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, and funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Museums and Galleries Scotland and Forestry Commission Scotland.

What is Heritage North about?

Heritage North has two main objectives: first, to present the heritage sector of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland to the rest of the world, and secondly, to offer resources and networking facilities to that sector.

What is the background to Heritage North?

Although primarily an arts development agency, HI-Arts also has a long history of working in the heritage sector, hosting posts on behalf of both the Scottish Museums Council, and the Heritage Lottery Fund.  A report following the conclusion of the HLF post identified networking and communication as two of the key issues affecting the heritage groups in the Highlands and Islands.  A single, comprehensive website for the sector was seen as an important first step in addressing those issues.

How does Heritage North bring publicity to the heritage sector?

Through its database Heritage North offers access to  those elements  of the “distributed collection” of Scotland,  held within the Highlands and Islands. We hope that this ‘virtual’ access will stimulate ‘real’ visits and contacts to all kinds of heritage sites and organisations.

How is Heritage North going to help develop the sector?

By bringing attention to resources offering training, funding, access to information, and offering a platform whereby the sector can recognise and talk to itself.

How can I get my museum or heritage centre on the database?

Go to this page and fill in the form. Send it back, either by email or post with a few photos and we will make sure that you get a page on the database. It is free.

I like the look of the site, tell me about that?

Glad you like it. The site was built using the Sitekit Content Management System. The graphic design was managed and co-ordinated by Redpath and features the work of Hilke MacIntyre. A screenprint of the Heritage North design work can be purchased from Hilke.

What else can Heritage North offer?

Heritage North can offer two email lists: one for general interest in the heritage of the Highlands and Islands, the other is for those signed to the site, who wll be able to exchange business and specialist information.

Anything else?

We are always glad to hear from you and can offer publicity for your exhibition, outreach scheme or development. We can feature you in articles on your museum, prize object, star volunteer, a good experience you have had with a professional, or just about anything else you want to talk to us about. Email Avril for further details.
