Rona is an alcoholic who has lived a life of excess in London. Following the end of her relationship, she loses herself in her addiction until a violent encounter leads to her entering rehab. In an effort to maintain her sobriety, she returns to her home in Orkney. There she clashes with her religious mother and works on her father’s farm, helping him through his bipolar episodes.

Struggling to adjust to her sober life, Rona moves to the more remote Papa Westray, where the wild beauty of the island contrasts with her fractured memories of London. As past and present converge, Rona connects with both herself and her surroundings, and finally starts to see a future worth living one day at a time.

Based on Amy Liptrot’s memoir of the same name, Saoirse Ronan gives a powerful and emotional performance in this moving drama about addiction and generational trauma. Filmed on Orkney, the islands are depicted in stunning visuals.
