The Ballad of Wallis Island

12A

Herb McGwyer arrives on the remote Wallis Island to play a gig for Charles Heath, a rich superfan of Herb’s now-defunct folk duo McGwyer Mortimer. When Herb realises that the show’s crowd of ‘less than a hundred people’ is in fact solely Charles, he’s none too pleased. Nor when Nell Mortimer, the other half of McGwyer Mortimer and Herb’s former girlfriend, arrives with her husband.

With Herb and Nell together, Charles hopes he can finally get a reunion of his favourite band. But memories and old emotions resurface, forcing them, and Charles, to confront their pasts.

Written by and starring Tim Key and Tom Basden, this humble comedy-drama offers a quiet and sentimental take on human connection with some harmonious songs.

“There are songs sung sweetly, insults hurled then retracted, and a balm of kindness in every frame” The Times

“While audiences will probably expect to laugh, they may be surprised to find themselves shedding a tear or two as well.” Screen International

“a big-hearted, consoling hug of a movie” Empire
