Mustang

In a sleepy town in Northern Turkey, new metal gates, window grilles and a fence are being put up around a family home. These are not to keep burglars out, but to keep five orphaned sisters in. When a neighbour spots the girls play-fighting with male classmates on the last day of term, gossip gets back to their grandmother who, desperate to protect their so-called ‘purity’, has the two eldest taken for a virginity test. Stuck at home and bored out of their minds, by the time the marriage suitors start to roll in, the girls know they could be swapping one prison for another. The girls rebel where and how they can – by sneaking off to watch a football match, secretly learning how to drive and the eldest negotiates her way to marrying her beau. When one of the sisters meets a tragic end it forces the two youngest to take dramatic steps to escape. Mustang has been picking up awards over the past year and was shortlisted for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. If you are a mother, a daughter, a sister or a rebel, Mustang’s touching, gripping, controversial and tense story is truly unforgettable. "Film of the year" Janice Forsyth, BBC Scotland. "Gripping, a sweet, sad Turkish delight" **** The Guardian.
