Lonely six-year-old Lilo longs for a best friend. Her classmates ostracise her for being weird, while her teenage sister Nani spends all of her time juggling school, work, and caring for Lilo as her legal guardian following their parents’ deaths.
Things start to improve when they adopt a blue ‘dog’ that Lilo names Stitch. Wild, unruly, and gross, he’s the perfect friend for Lilo, who teaches him about ‘Ohana, the Hawaiian concept of extended family. But Stitch is an alien experiment designed to create chaos and havoc, hunted by both alien and human agents. As his bond with Lilo grows, Stitch reconsiders his behaviour to keep their family together.
One of Disney’s most original animations from 2002 gets a live-action/CGI remake in this silly but heartwarming tale about friendship and family, reminding us that while neither is always perfect, they can greatly enrich our lives.
“a sweet, funny, simple story with a cute central duo” Time Out
“It’s jovial, zany, and sweet, and it recreates its adorable title alien via CGI (and a Sanders voice performance) with pitch-perfect accuracy.” The Daily Beast
“does moving and spirited work in showcasing how crucial it is for us to lift each other up.” Slant
