| Introduction to Film Industry Development in the Highlands and Islands |

HI~Arts has been bringing the big screen cinema experience to the Highlands and Islands since 1998, via its two mobile cinemas Screen Machines One and Two. |
In the course of 2007, two major cinema developments reached their conclusions. Our hire of the first Screen Machine to Eden Court Theatre, as a ‘stand-in’ cinema during their rebuilding work, ended after two years with the reopening of the theatre and its two new handsome cinema auditoria. Another two year programme, Rural Cinema North, led by Matt Lloyd, also came to an end, but only to serve as the launch pad for a much bigger and more ambitious project. |

Since May 2007 HI~Arts has been working with Scottish Screen to develop plans for a ‘rural cinema hub’ to sit alongside the other major exhibition hubs which they already fund, from the Eden Court to Edinburgh Filmhouse. The template for this new, Scotland-wide agency has been the work which Matt Lloyd carried out under the Rural Cinema North banner.
Regional Screen Scotland, as the new ‘hub’ is to be called, is in the process of being set up, and a Director recruited. It should be open for business in the autumn of 2008. Regional Screen Scotland will offer a range of support services for any community or group hoping to develop access to quality cinema facilities, at whatever level.
Meanwhile, Screen Machine 2 continues to serve some 23 different communities around the north and west of Scotland, almost half of them on islands. From April 2009, Screen machine 2, and its operating team, will amalgamate with the new agency, Regional Screen Scotland.
