Services to the Arts
Scottish Cultural Development Forum

Founded in 1992, it is now a group of around 160 arts development professionals who meet three times a year in Edinburgh and Glasgow to hear presentations by guest speakers, exchange information and discuss relevant issues. Membership allows access to A&B's professional development programmes - Skills Bank and Board Bank (see below). Annual membership £70 - £90 +VAT. Business Digest

A monthly publication which draws together essential Scottish business information from a wide range of publications in a clear and concise format. Specifically designed for the busy arts professional who needs clues fast, it offers leads on which companies might be relevant to particular arts projects. Emailed for speed. Annual subscription £45.


Individual Surgeries

One-to-one meetings on honing sponsorship proposals and tailoring specific leads on potential business sponsorship. By appointment.


Job Advertising

Arts & Business Scotland offers a job advertisement mailout service emailed to members of the Scottish Cultural Development Forum (SADF). Currently over 160 in Scotland and nationally across the UK approx 1,000 members. For more information please download form.


The Arts & Business Library & Publications

A small library containing information on trusts and foundations (including Grant Making Trusts CD Rom), sponsorship and donations yearbooks, annual reports, business magazines, sales and marketing guides. Filled with expert advice and information, these publications are essential reading for sponsorship and marketing managers, arts professionals and development workers, fundraisers and students. By appointment.

Introduction to Sponsorship Seminar

A half-day course, covering the basics of obtaining sponsorship for those who have little or no experience or those who wish to refresh themselves on the fundamental principles and practice in this important area of the arts funding mix. £80 +VAT - includes the Arts & Business Sponsorship Manual. Selling and Negotiating Sponsorship Deals

A one-day course for arts development professionals who know the fundamentals of obtaining sponsorship and now wish to develop their selling and negotiating skills, and those who need a refresher on how to 'close the deal'. Prior attendance of the A&B Introduction to Sponsorship seminar is useful but not essential. Cost: £120 +VAT, includes all materials refreshments and lunch. Professional Development Programmes

Through our Arts & Business Programmes we assist Arts Development Forum members with specific projects, management and professional development. These programmes are free of charge but only available to members of the Scottish Cultural Development Forum.

Skills Bank:

Offers the opportunity to focus on, and resolve, a particular management problem or task while, at the same time, broadening your management skills.

Our business advisors :

- can give assistance with a whole range of management issues
- will have experience in such areas as strategic development, financial control, business planning, project management, marketing and human resources
- are not consultants - but managers from a variety of professions
- share a passion for the arts.

Board Bank:

This programme places business volunteers from a wide range of sectors on the boards of arts organisations and museums.

It gives you access to a wide range of potential business members:

- trained in good board practice
- with sound commercial experience
- with business skills in essential areas such as finance, law, personnel and marketing.



Board Governance

A&B offers a range of facilitation, training, tools and best practice for arts organisations and their Boards, to help them fulfil their potential through strong and effective governance.

Trustee Training:

A half-day seminar examining the roles and responsiblities of a board member in the cultural sector, which is equally relevant to new board directors and those who would like a refresher. £55 + VAT per person. Full Board Development Day:

A one-day, bespoke programme designed to assist the Board of an arts organisation/ museum to develop and make the best possible use of the skills and experience of its board members. An experienced A&B trainer will facilitate the day and tailor it to address your chosen areas. There are a number of subsidised free development days, please contact us for eligibility. Otheriwse the cost is £1,350 + VAT.

A&B can also discuss longer and shorter bespoke board development courses.

Making the Most of Your Board:

A 24-hour residential course for Chief Executives, Directors and Senior Officers who work directly to Boards of Trustees or Directors. An informal and practical course designed as an opportunity to explore ways of improving the performance and contribution of your board and to make the relationship more effective and productive. There are a number of subsidised free places available, please contact us to check whether you could benefit. Otherwise the cost is £230 + VAT per person including accommodation.
