In the Wake of Bright Water
By Jon Pope, commissioned by Mull Theatre
Availability Sept/Oct/Nov 2006. Cost £400-£500

A dramatic portrait of one of the most extraordinary Scots of recent times, the naturalist and explorer, Gavin Maxwell (1914-69) based on his own writing. Maxwell - social renegade, basking shark hunter, racing driver, wartime secret agent and poet - is one of the most popular authors of wildlife books this century. In Ring of Bright Water (1959), his depiction of the West Highlands captivated the world. However, his success came, eventually, to haunt him. Maxwell’s constant battle with the elements and the wildlife – including the otters – contrast with the idealised picture that the film drew. His quest for personal freedom and his longing to live closely with the natural world are balanced with the practical realities of living without electricity or mains water – or even a road to his house on Scotland’s west coast. Together with Maxwell’s failed relationships, his lack of money and the eventual destruction of his “absolute paradise”, it makes a fascinating tale.
Cast: 2. Length - about 2 hours including an interval.

Cyprus
By Peter Arnott, commissioned by Mull Theatre
Availability April/May/June 2006. Cost: negotiable

After a successful run at the Mull Little Theatre in the summer, Cyprus transfers London, where it runs for four weeks, until December 16. There is a tremendous amount of media interest in this highly topical thriller, which has been chosen by the Ambassador Theatre Group to open the new 100-seater theatre at Trafalgar Studios in Whitehall.
The play connects the islands of Mull and Cyprus, by a tangled route via Oman, Afghanistan and Iraq. The three characters meet up on Mull: “Colonel" Brian Traquair is a man with a secretive past and an ambiguous present. Ostensibly retired, he still gets summoned to Whitehall every so often to share his hard-won expertise. His troubled daughter Alison waits for him in his remote home. But this time Traquair returns with company, a figure from both their pasts. Michael Griffen, Traquair's old protégé, brings back the darkness of the outside world. And through the door with him come wars foreign and domestic, old and new. Terrorism and intrigue, corruption and covert action, have come home.
Cast: 3. Length: about 2 hours and 10 minutes including an interval.

“Peter Arnott’s clever new thriller is nothing if not contemporary… Arnott has channelled his anger into a play that looks and sounds a bit like Sleuth, rewritten by John Le Carre and with an extra cast member to redouble the layers of deception…even without recent events it would be a telling, as well as a highly watchable, piece of drama. With them, it borders on the chilling.” Robert Dawson Scott, The Times ****

“…a truly gripping attempt by one of Scotland's leading contemporary playwrights to use the conventions of the country-house thriller to explore one of the hottest political topics of the hour - namely the shape, direction and morality of British foreign policy and its role in promoting or denying peace and justice, not only in the world's conflict zones, but also in hearts and minds back home…it's something of an education to watch three actors whip up such a huge drama on the tiny ten-foot Dervaig stage in a dazzling demonstration that, in theatre at least, size isn't everything” Joyce McMillan, Scotsman ****
Egg
By Fiona Colliss
A Mull Theatre/Clown Conspiracy co-production
Availability Autumn 2006. Cost £275.

Written and performed by Fiona Colliss – trained clown, circus artist, youth theatre leader and registered "Clown Doctor", this full-length Clown Show had an extremely successful run in Mull Little Theatre during the summer holidays, where it entranced small children and adults alike. It is the story of the clown, Red, whose mission is to protect two eggs that are bound for Earth in a spaceship. Red must protect, love, entertain and educate the precious eggs on their journey, but sometimes she gets carried away and things don’t go to plan! A very family friendly show, suitable for all ages.
Cast: 1. Length – about 50 minutes.

“Normally, I'm the kind of person who has to be carried out of clown shows, catatonic with boredom. But Colliss's clowning, delivered in a sparkly purple catsuit rather than the usual baggy gear, struck me as elegant, original, emotionally appealing and unusually thoughtful. The kids certainly loved it and, as for the large numbers of holiday-duty dads in the audience - well, oddly enough, on a sunny afternoon in Dervaig, they weren't complaining much either.”
