Description: |
Kintyre Civic Society is a local organization affiliated to the Scottish Civic Trust. Its aim is to protect and enhance the quality of Kintyre’s built and natural environment. Membership: Individual membership costs £5.00 per year or £7.00 for a family. Committee: The committee meets monthly and has up to 6 members beside its Officers. Activities: The AGM is held in the spring and usually has an outside speaker. An annual outing takes place in the early summer to a place of special interest in Argyll. Every other year we participate in the Doors Open Day which is a nationwide initiative allowing access to the inside of buildings which are not normally open to the public. The next event in Kintyre will be held in September 2009. Publications: As a millennium project the Society published in 2003 The Campbeltown Book. Chapters cover a wide range of subjects from the physical (geology, architecture) to employment (fishing , agriculture, whisky distilling, coal mining) to the social (churches, education etc.). All these and more are covered from a perspective which stretches from the historical to the present day. The book is nearly 400 pages long and copies are available in Campbeltown bookshops or direct from the Chairman – a downloadable order form is provided below. In 2006 “An Historical and Genealogical Tour of Kilkerran Graveyard” by Angus Martin was published and a further volume is proposed for 2008/9. Based on Angus Martin’s information-packed tours in recent years around the historic gravestones in Kilkerran Graveyard, the book gives the fascinating background to 44 of the graves, together with much information of interest to family historians. George John Stewart has provided a number of illustrations (some of them light-hearted), and a map to enable you to pilot your way round the graveyard to find the graves described. Again copies can be obtained as above. |
