A new accredited professional development qualification for arts practitioners in Scotland.
The Arts Education in Practice Professional Development Award is brand new SQA (SCQF level 7) accredited training especially designed for arts practitioners of all art forms. If you are engaged in the delivery of workshops and projects with groups of children, young people or adults in formal or informal education and community contexts, then this is the course for you.
This is an outstanding opportunity to participate in a national pilot project and gain a professional qualification.
The Award will be piloted from September 2008-June 2009 in two locations:Glasgow and Inverness.
Who is the Award for?
The award has been designed for arts practitioners of all art forms who are delivering workshops and projects with groups of children, young people or adults.
Whether formally trained or not, as a candidate for this award you must demonstrate a commitment to your art form and be developing your practice working with groups in formal or informal education and community contexts.

What is the course content?
The award consists of three units:
- Preparing to deliver art form development sessions
- Assist individuals to experience art form practices
- Monitor, evaluate and develop practice.
In fulfilling these units candidates will develop a deeper knowledge of:
- How to develop programmes of work and plan effectively
- Child protection, health and safety and equal opportunities legislation and practical application
- Development of pedagogy and reflective practice.
Course information
The training will be delivered through a weekend residency, specialist input, a series of practical workshops, artist-led seminars and tutorials.
The course will consist of approximately fifteen full-day sessions between September- December 2008 with additonal seminars and tutorials between January-June 2009. The learning will involve work-based practice and candidates are required to have a work opportunity arranged between January-April 2009.
Candidates’ work practice will be subject to the appropriate Disclosure Scotland checks. Entry will be by application and interview and candidates will be asked to provide evidence of their artistic practice. Artists working in arts organisations and local authorities as well as individual practitioners are encouraged to apply. Full course details will be sent to you.
Application procedures will commence from May 2008.
The subsidised cost for this pilot project is £400 per candidate and limited places are available.
