Scottish Ballet Receives Top Award in Britain's Dance Oscars
24 January 2008

Scottish Ballet is delighted to announce that the Company was today awarded the Critics’ Circle National Dance Award Company Prize for Outstanding Repertoire (Classical), fending off competition from both The Royal Ballet and Bolshoi Ballet companies. The National Dance Awards are the highlight of the dance calendar and are voted for by critics, the majority of whom write regularly for national and regional newspapers and magazines.

Founded in 1999, the awards have rapidly become the dance event of the year drawing together the entire industry in sharing the very best of dance and ballet in the UK. The awards were announced this afternoon, in a ceremony at the Royal Opera House, London.

Scottish Ballet’s Artistic Director Ashley Page said:

‘We are absolutely delighted to receive this recognition. Our repertoire is developing all the time, and we have been fortunate enough to work with some outstanding choreographers and teachers – that kind of interaction is invaluable.”

Cindy Sughrue, Scottish Ballet’s Executive Producer added:

“This is a wonderful acknowledgment of the Company’s success on a national level. The award is a great way to end a fantastic year that saw Scottish Ballet present several world premieres and take to the stage for the third consecutive year at the prestigious Edinburgh International Festival. “

Scottish Ballet was also shortlisted in the category of Outstanding Repertoire (Classical) in 2004, 2005 and 2006. The Company is currently touring Ashley Page’s production of The Sleeping Beauty and will present a brand new production of Romeo and Juliet this spring throughout Scotland.
