HIGHLAND FRINGE EXHIBITION
Castle Gallery & Tore Art Gallery
8 – 29 September 2007

Paintings, Hand-made Prints, Jewellery and Sculpture
Inspired by the Culture and Landscape of the Highlands

This exhibition, jointly hosted by the Castle Gallery in Inverness and Tore Art Gallery on the Black Isle, will provide an opportunity to show and promote the work of some of the best artists living and working in the Highlands. It will include pieces from both established artists and emerging talent.

It has been organised in response to the failure of ‘Highland 2007: The Year Scotland Celebrates Highland Culture’ to adequately represent this major aspect of contemporary Highland culture, say gallery owners Denise Collins and Clare Blois.

Culture can be broadly interpreted to include sports, outdoor activities and a way of life but equally, at the same time, it should encompass the arts, not just the performing arts but also the visual arts.

In our opinion, the visual arts have not been given proper recognition in the 2007 programme. We therefore present this exhibition, independently of Highland 2007, to ensure a voice for the visual arts in the Highlands during this important year.

A good variety of work by Highland artists in a range of media will be exhibited across both galleries, including paintings by Tom Mabon, Jonathan Shearer, David Body and Suzanne Gyseman; screenprints by Evelyn Pottie and etchings from Kitty Watt; sculptural forms in wood by Alisdair McKay and ceramics by Alison Weightman; and silverwork and jewellery by Eileen Gatt and Alan Baillie.
