Play It Again goes Trad

The popular BBC “Play It Again” series is supported by a series of events open to the public throughout Scotland and brings a very special opportunity to the Highlands on Sunday 22nd July. The only traditional music event in the series will be organised by Fèis Rois, a Highland charity dedicated to the promotion and tuition of traditional music and Gaelic language and culture. The “Play It Again” traditional music day offers three distinctive sessions for people of all ages and ability levels to attend.

Firstly group music-making with renowned maestro Phil Cunningham is open to people with some experience in any instrument. A world-renowned multi instrumentalist, Phil works extensively in the television and film world as a composer, music director and presenter. He is much sought after as a record producer and he manages to juggle all of these diverse commitments to enable him to continue touring with long time musical partner and friend Aly Bain. His compositions are covered by musicians the world over, and he continues to write and add to his prolific repertoire. He is also a very gifted music director and is very much looking forward to the Highland event.

Singers of all ages and all ability levels including complete beginners can benefit from a session led by Eilidh Mackenzie, with the emphasis on Gaelic song and harmony singing. Eilidh, as well as recording her solo album, was a member of the group Mac-talla who performed and recorded Gaelic song and instrumental music. She is also a much respected Gaelic songwriter and has been commissioned to write words and/or melodies by a number of organisations. as well as recording her solo album, was a member.

Fèis Rois Ceilidh Trail students will lead a Come & Try session, where anyone can drop in and have a taster session on fiddle, harp, whistle, chanter, guitar or accordion.

This exciting event is free and takes place in the Spectrum Centre Inverness from 10am - 2pm. Following the 2-hour morning sessions, the groups will give an informal sharing of the mornings work to each other.

So if you have a fiddle under the bed, an accordion in a cupboard, a tune in your head or a song in your heart come along and try traditional music, dip into the rich treasure of Scottish traditional music and song. Fèis Rois invites you to knock on the door and give it a try.

A team of the finest musicians and singers will open the door to traditional music, leading a workshop open to all instruments and to the voice.
