White Handkerchief – An exhibition at Yesnaby
20 April 2007

An exciting site-specific exhibition will open its doors to the public on Sunday this week. Orkney based artists Clare Gee, Sheena Graham-George, Rik Hammond and John Shapter will be exhibiting some of their recent work, in the old MOD buildings at Yesnaby, which includes work influenced by the site itself.

Clare Gee’s work reflects the ownership of the land and the landscape through the symbolism of unofficial flags – reflecting the current process to find a satisfactory new community flag for Orkney.

Sheena Graham-George uses the idea of the picturesque in landscape art, and her work questions whether the view at Yesnaby, seen through a window of the look-out tower, conforms to the principles of picturesque beauty set down by William Gilpin in the 18th century - and if not, why not.

Rik Hammond will be displaying a series of experimental works in progress – drawings, found photographs, sound work and installation – partly inspired by the geology, environment and politics of the site.

Storms, the weather and the sea are ever present in the work that John Shapter will present – in the form of two and three dimensional constructions and wall pieces (a show of his recent work is also on show at the Loft Gallery in St. Margaret’s Hope).

The title of the exhibition comes from the name ‘Cape White Handkerchief’ – the coastal land mass in Labrador, Canada, almost exactly due West of Yesnaby across the Atlantic, and was chosen by the artists after looking at old maps of the area and wondering what was directly West of the site, out to sea.

The works which all, in their own way reflect the idea and theme of ‘landscape’, will be exhibited in the unconventional setting of the disused buildings at Yesnaby, for one week only until Saturday 28th April - and the artists are inviting people to an informal preview of the show on Sunday 22nd April, between 2pm and 4pm.
