Six Sirens Sing in Resolis
21 March 2007

Resolis Community Arts are hosting a new and prodigiously talented band – The Sirens, at Resolis Memorial Hall on 23rd March 2007. This new all-female band is kicking off their first Scottish tour showcasing their original compositions and a wealth of traditional and contemporary material ranging from Gaelic song to Bluegrass.

Fiddler and viola player, Shona Mooney, is one of Scotland’s leading young traditional musicians. Shona was the winner of the 2006 BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year. She has toured with the Scottish Folk Orchestra and the Unusual Suspects.

Singer Rachel Newton, also plays harp and fiddle. She is strongly influenced by a diversity of styles, which include jazz and the Gaelic tradition, and this is highly evident in both her playing and singing. She has performed all over the world and in 2005 was a finalist in the Young Traditional Musician of the Year at Celtic Connections.

Lillias Kinsman-Blake is a flautist and fiddler. She is a member of the acclaimed traditional group CrossCurrent and also plays with Rachel Newton as a duo.

Shona Kipling is a piano accordianist. She has won several competitions run by Comhaltas, twice becoming UK champion and has played in three all Ireland finals. In 2002, Shona was a finalist in the BBC Radio Two Young Folk Awards.

Olivia Ross is a fine well-known singer and fiddle player from Balintore in the north of Scotland and is a recent graduate of the Folk and Traditional Music degree in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where the band first met. Olivia has performed with many groups and been involved in a project with Katherine Tickell. In addition to her work with Sirens she also plays with Aidan O’Kane and Calum Stewart.

Last, but by no means least, Laura Salter is a fine mandolin player. She plays in many styles but favours bluegrass and American old time. She has worked on many musical projects often collaborating with students from Danish, Irish, Scottish and English folk degree courses.

Resolis Community Arts are delighted to welcome the Sirens. This penultimate event of the season should be another very special night.

The concert starts at 8 pm, tickets are £8, with £6 concession and can be reserved or will be available on the door. For further information and ticket reservations contact David Gilbert, 01381 610 204 or Kenny Taylor 01349 877 625. Resolis Community Arts are grateful for the support received from Highland Council.
