Inverness Film Fans were delighted when Professor Kenneth MacKinnon accepted an invitation to join them for a screening of Peter Bogdanovich’s 1971 film 'The Last Picture Show' (Cert.15) on Tuesday 19 December 2006 at 7pm in the Old High Church Hall, Academy Street, Inverness.
Professor MacKinnon will introduce the film and then will lead a discussion after the film 'Small-town America'.
Some will remember Kenneth MacKinnon from his school days at Inverness Royal Academy. Many may also remember his piano recitals this October in the Town Hall. Like music, films have been a passion throughout his life and in 1984, after a career teaching Classics, he changed direction completely and introduced Film Studies to the London Metropolitan University where he taught the subject as a degree course until his retiral in 2005.
This film features in one of Professor MacKinnon’s books entitled 'Hollywood Small Towns'. Now regarded as a modern classic, it stars the young Jeff Bridges and Cybil Shepherd, centres on the closing of a local cinema and is a surprisingly frank and bittersweet drama of social and sexual mores in small-town Texas.
