The World Premiere performances of three new pieces by Ullapool-based composer James Douglas were given by The Glorious Company at the The Macphail Centre, in Ullapool earlier this month.
The new pieces were dedicated to ‘The Ullapool Bookshop’, ‘The Frigate’ and one for the people of Ullapool, entitled 'The Ullapool Fanfare'. It was wonderful to see a full compliment of staff, owners and villagers at the concert.
A large and enthusiastic audience welcomed the performers, and applauded enormously throughout the evening. The ensemble were making their debut in Ullapool, and also performed a number of James Douglas’s other popular works, including 'The Ceilidh Place,' 'Wee Cooper of Fife', and much more.
During the Interval, the composer’s new sequence, 'The Highlands and Islands Sequence', comprising 66 works written between 1968 and 2006, was launched with a short performance by Ian and Kirsty Ann Macfarlane, with a piece written for them by the composer.
'It was music I could listen to all evening' was one of the many favourable comments. James Douglas was delighted with the concert and heralded it a 'triumph'. Many people were amazed to hear so many different styles of music by one composer.
Performers included: George Gwilt (flute), James Douglas (piano), Alistair Neally (trumpet), Pam Brown (trumpet), Richard Mein (baritone) and Katharine Douglas (soprano).
James Douglas’s music is published by Eschenbach Editions and Caritas Music Publishing.
