Martin Simpson & Martin Taylor Friday 10th November
Martin Simpson - Awesome guitar player who has performed with The Albion Band and Richard Thompson, and who succeeds in bridging the gap between Mississippi style slide guitar and English folk ballads. Winner of the 'Best Album' and 'Best Instrumentalist' at the 2002 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
Martin Taylor - Multi award-winning virtuoso guitarist, and Britain's best-selling jazz recording artist. His dazzling technique enables him to play a wide range of styles from Django-esque single note runs to pianistic, chord-and-bass line solos. He describes himself as a guitarist who plays jazz rather than a jazz musician whose chosen instrument is the guitar.
Blazin' Fiddles 14th November
Take a group of the hottest contemporary fiddle players from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland and you've got Blazin' Fiddles on your hands. In the past decade no other band has quite captured the excitement, passion and the sensitivity of Scottish music as Blazin'Fiddles. During a performance, the audience has a rare opportunity to hear pieces featuring the regional styles of each fiddler followed by all hands jumping in for a wonderful explosion of music. Fiddles and bows blaze away with guitar and piano for one of the most exciting and memorable fiddle ensembles ever to take the stage.
Nazareth + Lights Out By Nine (in support) February 23rd Ticket price £15 Just announced
Nazareth was formed in 1968 in Dunfermline out of the ashes of semi-professional local group The Shadettes (formerly the Mark V and The Red Hawks) by vocalist Dan McCafferty, Guitarist Manny Charlton, Bassist Pete Agnew, and Drummer Darrell Sweet. They took their name from the first line of The Bands classic song "The Weight" ("I pulled into Nazareth/Was feelin' half past dead...") The band moved to London 1970, and released their self-titled debut album in 1971. After getting some attention with their second album Exercises, released in 1972, Nazareth issued Razamanaz in early 1973. This collection spawned two UK Top Ten hits, "Broken Down Angel" and "Bad Bad Boy." This was followed by Loud 'N' Proud in late 1973, which contained another hit single with a hard-rocking cover of Joni Mitchel's song "This Flight Tonight". Then came another album Rampant, in 1974, that was equally successful. A non-album song, again a cover version, this time of Tomorrow's "My White Bicycle", was a UK Top 20 entry in 1975.
Hair Of The Dog, was released in 1975. The title track of that album (popularly, though incorrectly, known as "Now You're Messing With A Son Of A Bitch") became a staple of 1970s rock radio. American version of the album included originally recorded by The Everly Brothers and also covered by Roy Orbison expressively melodic ballad "Love Hurts" that was released as a hit single in the UK and in the USA, where it went Platinum. Naz have continued to tour all over the world opening up new territories, particularly in Eastern Europe and Russia in recent years and continue to release quality epochal Rock albums. But its for their dynamic live show they have always and will always be best know, we are delighted to presenting Nazareth for their first ever show in the Highland capital
Supported by Lights Out By Nine (Scotland's Leading RnB Band) http://www.lightsoutbynine.co.uk/ Lights Out By Nine play powerhouse rhythm and blues, and have now developed a collection of their own original songs, which is commanding a growing amount of media attention. Lights Out By Nine continue to build on their growing reputation as a great live band, playing gigs and festivals and radio sessions. The band's single, "On a Night Like This" was play-listed by Radio Forth for four consecutive weeks, and a track on video from the single "Where White Men Sing the Blues" was released for Russian Television. In 2003 signed to Blues Matters Records and released "Good Morning Mr Universe", which features another 10 original songs from the band. The album has been played all over Europe (East and West) and beyond, to critical acclaim, and features regularly in quality blues shows in Atlanta Chicago as well as our own Paul Jones show BBC Radio 2. In the meantime, the band continued to build a bigger reputation on the live circuit, having supported Status Quo and Fish at the Rockhill Festival and opened shows featuring Dr Feelgood, Nazareth, Nine Below Zero and Wishbone Ash, as well as repeat shows with the Average White Band. Lights Out By Nine also had the pleasure in 2003 of appearing at the tribute concert at Glasgow's famous Barrowlands Ballroom for legendary Scottish singer/songwriter Frankie Miller. Joe Walsh from the Eagles headlined that show. A track on the subsequent tribute album released on Eagle Records saw LOBN being included with a host of names from the rock and blues industry paying homage to own of their own. That year they headlined the Easter Ross Easter Festival at Pormahomack.
