Young German violinist Viviane Hagner makes her debut with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in concerts in St Andrews, Perth, Glasgow and Edinburgh between 1 and 4 November, playing Beethoven's only Violin Concerto. The tour also sees the Orchestra perform Haydn's 'London' symphony and Gluck's Overture, Iphigenie en Aulide, with conductor Frans Brüggen.
Thirty-year-old Viviane Hagner made her international debut at the age of twelve. For her debut with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra she performs Beethoven's Violin Concerto which, with its rhapsodic slow movement, became a model for the violin concerto of the Romantic period.
Haydn's Symphony No 104 was the last of his London symphonies - twelve masterpieces written for performance during the composer's two celebrated visits to Britain. The rustic finale has a Croatian folk song as its main theme, though Londoners claimed it was inspired by the street cry, 'Hot Cross Buns', which Haydn heard outside his window.
Conductor Frans Brüggen is a regular guest with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. As founder of the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century and an expert in music of this particular period, Brüggen is perfectly suited to the programme of these four concerts.
