Pilot International Residency at An Tuireann
13 October 2006

An Tuireann in Portree, Isle of Skye, launches a pilot residency programme with artists Teddy Lo (New York) and Keiko Mukaide (Japan) (7 Oct - 4 Nov 2006).

The period will be used by the artists to purely focus on the developments of their practice. There is no expectation on finished work during the residency but the artists will be encouraged to develop concepts that may eventually be scheduled into the exhibition programme. An Tuireann is keen to develop a structure where we initiate ‘new work’ and provide the freedon for artists to be innovative and experimental within a creative environment. The artists selected for the initial year are both leading exponets in their field, either developing new parameters of technology or are surpassing the limitations of materials, they both however use an element of ‘light’ within their work.

Teddy Lo is an emerging New York based LED artist who creates installations that address issues of light pollution within a city environment, which challenge us to see the subtly and details of our surroundings. In 2003 Lo staged his first visual art exhibition in New York, which provided his entrance into the art scene. Following this he was nominated in 'Whos Who of lighting 2004' and has recently completed an exhibition in Bejing.

Keiko Mukaide is renowned for her large scale installation work using blown glass repeated units. Her glass sculptures are influenced greatly by natural forms, climates and microscopic organisms. During the residency Keiko will be researching the ‘Aurora Borealis’ and ‘Healing wells’. Trained in Japan, the UK, France, Germany and the USA, Keiko has exhibited world wide and won numerous awards including the Creative Scotland Award for 2000 and has recently completed a large wall piece at the Tate St Ives.
