Scottish Youth Theatre is stravaiging up to join in on the Highland
21 September 2006

Out with thatched roofs and townships, in other words, authenticity and community moral, and in with the modern way! When this change occurred in the 18th century, the Highlands identity began to fade, which is why Highland 2007 is about to change everything.

Too often is the focus on the cities that the highlands have had to wait in a long line for their turn to impress the rest of the country.  By fusing the best of the best throughout the country and forming partnerships, Highland 2007 will not only represent Scotland's Year of Highland Culture (Jack McConnell, March 2003) but also a year of coming together and breaking moulds, and Scottish Youth Theatre is getting involved!

This is a pilot project under the banner of Highland 2007, which runs from 25th September through to 6th October 2006. During the project Scottish Youth Theatre tutors will bring history alive with various groups from Kingussie High School and other local primaries. The first week of the project will be based in the schools, with participants exploring a variety of drama and group work skills, whilst devising their very own historical scenes. In the second week some groups will get the chance to visit the Baile Gean Township (Township of Goodwill) at the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore. Whilst visiting this authentically re-created 1700s township, the groups will develop their ideas into a short site-specific promenade performance at the Highland Folk Museum.

This project not only aims to encourage young people to participate in cultural activities, but also aims to highlight the significance of highland culture and history.

Kenny McGlashan, Assistant Director at Scottish Youth Theatre commented, "Our aim is to instill confidence and self-awareness while representing history in a fresh and exciting way. By mixing the old with the new and producing something that everyone will enjoy, this project will hopefully entice young people to participate in future cultural activities."
