30 August 2006
Shetland Arts season of traditional music sessions for young musicians kicks off again in the Lounge Bar, Lerwick next Tuesday 5th September 2006 from 7pm with more sessions to follow on 3rd October and 7th November. More dates will be published shortly.
The sessions are aimed at giving young musicians an opportunity to meet and play tunes informally together in one of Shetland’s most famous traditional music venues, which closes it doors for normal trade especially for the occasions, although audience members are of course welcome too.
Less experienced young musicians will have the opportunity to shine in their own session from 7pm – 8.30, when more experienced young players can join in.
Throughout the season a range of top local musicians will be on hand to guide the sessions and assist the young musicians as and when necessary.
Shetland Arts Music Development Officer Davie Gardner said “These sessions have proved very popular over the last couple of years we have been running them. It allows the young musicians a chance to trade and play tunes together in a very informal fashion, with some of our more established and experienced musicians on hand to provide initial encouragement and assistance where necessary. Hopefully this kind of evening will help to sustain the interest in traditional session playing which is so much a part of our local culture”.
Entry for musicians and audiences is free of charge, everyone over 12 years old is welcome to attend and the evenings are of course alcohol free.
