Showcasing local talent in Perth
23 August 2006

Country, rock, folk, pop and alternative music are a selection of the sounds you’ll be able to hear at Songs for Grown Ups at Perth Theatre on Saturday 2 September.

Four of Perthshire’s finest song writers and musicians – Sou thpaw, Fraser Anderson, The Hugh Trowsers Band and Michael Rattray Allstars - come together for a great night of eclectic music and a celebration of some superb local talent.

“We’ve decided to showcase these acts in particular because they are all making waves on the national scene and it made sense to showcase them together on a big stage for our local audience to enjoy,” says Andy Shearer, Creative Director, rock and pop at Horsecross.

“Southpaw have been getting lots of national airplay since they released 'Buffalo Mansions' last year; Hugh Trowsers have gigged the length and breadth of the country and charted with their single celebrating Gretna’s run to the Scottish Cup Final; Michael Rattray goes from strength to strength and toured the UK with Sam Brown earlier this year. Fraser Anderson too continues to grow as an artist and will be moving to France to capitalise on the great reaction he’s had there via the successful website ‘myspace’.”

Southpaw will bring you their sweet country music to soothe and satisfy the soul. Formed in 2003 by five musicians, Southpaw began to work on the debut album 'Buffalo Mansions' which was self released in August 2005 to critical acclaim. Constant gigging and promotion have ensured a rapidly growing momentum with the initial album selling out within six months and subsequently a worldwide distribution and recording deal with the Goldrush label.

Fraser Anderson was one of the many stars in Perth Concert Hall’s magnificent Pearls of the Tay launch concert last September. He was the lead vocalist on four songs including Dougie Maclean hit “Solid Ground” and “The Loch Tay Boat Song” with the Aberfeldy and District Gaelic Choir. No doubt he’ll be as equally as entertaining on this night with an array of his very own songs covering contemporary folk, jazz and soul.

Another big hit of our opening weekend was Perth's Michael Rattray Allstars who supported Belle and Sebastian as part of our opening gala launch weekend. Michael Rattray’s influences range from Michael Jackson through to PJ Harvey and Nirvana, and his inspiration came from his need to comment on and analyse the emotions of daily life. Whilst filming a promo video for a TV show, Michael met vocal legend Sam Brown and before long the two were working together with Robin (Wynn-Evans) on the single ‘Booty’ then supporting her on tour.

If you love the sounds of the 70s, 80s and 90s, then you have to see and hear The Hugh Trowsers Band. They have forged themselves a unique brand of adult-oriented guitar pop with a cunningly concealed dark side. Audiences can look forward to enjoying lively lyrics with strong identifiable vocal, jangly guitar hooks galore and the honey-coated harmonies reminiscent of 60s acoustic pop.

Horsecross is dedicated to showcasing local talent and providing a venue for local musicians. We had Pearls of the Tay last year, the Tsunami Appeal Concert in March organised by Perth Youth Enquiry Service, and we are currently running The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle. “The Swindle” is a project in partnership with acclaimed music outfit “Music at The Brewhouse” giving five local bands and musicians a chance to arrange and record their own music with some of the best in the business.

“We are committed to providing a platform for local talent wherever possible,” says Andy “but we need to be creative about it. In Songs for Grown Ups we are combining four acts and offering a really interesting package. People should have no reservations about the “local” tag line – these artists just happen to be based here but they can hold their own at a national and international level.”

“It will be a superb night and the theatre is a wonderful, intimate venue for music,” adds Andy.

Songs for Grown Ups is at Perth Theatre on Saturday 2 September. Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets £8: £6 concessions. To book call 0845 612 6319 or log onto www.horsecross.co.uk
