August isn’t just a month for the fun and excitement of the Edinburgh Festival. Perth Theatre and concert hall also has a vast array of music on offer for all tastes during the hot Scottish summer.
First up is the Jeff Healey Band, on Sunday 6 August with support from Italian bluesman Rudy Rotta. JHB is one of the world’s most celebrated blues-rock acts, and will play their only Scottish gig in Perth. The trio have shared a stage with legends such as ZZ Top, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan and Bon Jovi to name a few. Their albums have topped the Billboard and Canadian charts, with the latter successfully selling millions worldwide. If you love rock, don’t miss this Scottish Exclusive gig.
On Monday 7 August, Perth Theatre welcomes Flamenco dancers from Southern Spain. Jaleo Flamenco will bring their explosive footwork, haunting singing, virtuoso guitar playing and percussive handclapping to the stage for a night of tremendous Mediterranean entertainment. So if you didn’t get the chance to fly off to far-away lands, you can still experience some of the exotic at Perth Theatre.
It’s a family affair on Friday 11 August when Peter Morrison with daughter Jackie, son Richard and daughter-in-law Hannah perform Broadway, West End favourites, popular opera and also a taste of Scots at Perth Theatre. There will also be humorous interventions from popular comedian, Eddie Devine.
Two “Kings” of a different sort will descend on the Fair City for unforgettable nights of entertainment. Look out for Billy J McGregor’s tribute show The Elvis Collection on Saturday 12 August and Fife based Kenny Anderson aka King Creosote on Sunday 13 August.
For those who like smoother and more classic tones, two outstanding artists Jacqui Dankworth and Todd Gordon pay homage to the musical genius of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald in Frank and Ella on Saturday 19 August. The duo will perform in Perth before taking the show to this year’s Edinburgh Festival, songs you’ll be able to enjoy include: Lady Be Good, Summer Wind, Every Time We Say Goodbye and Lady is a Tramp to name but a few.
With the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Noel Gallagher and Neil Young raving about this man, it’s definitely worth giving this guitar legend a go. Bert Jansch is performing on Thursday 24 August at Perth Theatre and in a live setting, his performances are an understated, low key approach. The audience is treated to a guitar playing master class with an impressive catalogue of some of the most emotive and haunting songs in his back catalogue.
To polish off a jam-packed August, another Edinburgh Festival treat comes to Perth in the form of Scottish award-winning group Blazin’ Fiddles. They will bring their distinct fiddle music on Tuesday 29 August along with roots revivalists Old Blind Dogs for this Horsecross Exclusive. Blazin’ Fiddles performed a sell out concert in Perth last September and promise to wow the audience once again with their passionate and uplifting Scottish fiddle music. Also, this will be your last chance to see Perthshire’s own Jim Malcolm with “the Dogs” before he sets out to embark on a solo career.
