An exciting new opportunity for community music and the Gaelic language in rural Lochaber gets underway from 17th April 2006, with the launch of ‘Ceilear!’
‘Ceilear!’ offers adults in and around Mallaig, Acharacle and Ballachulish the chance to get together on a regular basis to learn Gaelic song and sing in harmony, without feeling that they are getting into the formal setting of a choir. The project is open to all and the emphasis is on enjoyment - the ‘buzz’ of singing together and learning more about the songs and language.
The pilot project, which will run from April to June, comes under the wing of the Ballachulish Community Arts Society, with the cooperation of the Mallaig and Morar Community Centre, local singers in Ardnamurchan and musician and broadcaster, Mary Ann Kennedy.
Singing sessions will take place in each of the villages under the guidance of Mary Ann and a team of song leaders, excellent musicians in their own right, but hand-picked also for their ability to inspire folk to make great music together.
They include Cliar’s Maggie Macdonald and Ingrid Henderson, Rachel Walker, Fiona MacKenzie – this year’s Mod Gold Medallist, and one of Scotland’s top choral conductors, Kenny Thomson.
‘Ceilear!’ will round off the pilot scheme with a gathering of singers from the three areas at Arainn Shuaineirt in Strontian on 24th June. Special guests on the night will include the Inverness Gaelic Choir, current holders of the prestigious Lovat and Tullibardine trophy.
The pilot has been made possible by an grant from Bòrd na Gàidhlig’s Gaelic Initiatives Fund, and work is continuing to secure the funding to allow ‘Ceilear!’ to continue from the autumn right through the Year of Highland Culture in 2007. Indications are very promising and it’s hoped to be able to make an announcement in the near future.
