The National Theatre of Scotland presents 'Elizabeth Gordon Quinn' by Chris Hannan at Dundee Rep, The Citizens, Perth Theatre, The Royal Lyceum, His Majesty’s Theatre from 25th April – 10th June 2006.
‘Chris Hannan’s monstrous and magnificent heroine……. One of the best women’s roles ever to emerge from Scottish Theatre.’ Joyce Macmillan in The Guardian (1985)
Set against the background of the Rent Strikes, which saw mass demonstrations on the streets of Glasgow, Elizabeth Gordon Quinn is a contemporary classic, featuring one of the best women’s roles ever to emerge from Scottish theatre. The year is 1915, the world is at war and Elizabeth Gordon Quinn’s son is wanted by the police for desertion from his regiment. However whilst others worry about food, a roof above their heads and troubled times, Elizabeth Gordon Quinn has but one concern, her piano. She can’t play a note but she believes it sets her apart from her impoverished neighbours. Holding court amidst her dysfunctional family and its filth, Elizabeth Gordon Quinn is an unforgettable tragicomic heroine with an extraordinary power to repel and attract.
