Three of the best jazz musicians on the planet will be performing a one-off concert at Perth Concert Hall on Tuesday 7 February.
Guitarist John Scofield, bass player John Patitucci and drummer Peter Erskine who all hail from The States, rarely perform together as a trio. However, in Perth, they will be getting together for a night of rip-roaring jazz standards.
They all have incredible musical backgrounds and have performed with some of the world’s musical greats. Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk-edged jazz and R & B. Touring with Miles Davis in the late 70s, placed him firmly in the foreground of jazz consciousness as a player and composer.
“I wanted Scofield to come to Perth because he’s one of the greatest living jazz artists,” says Svend Brown, Creative Director of Classical Music at Horsecross. “I’ve seen him playing with everything from symphony orchestra to trio to rock band to swing outfit. He’s got great personal charisma, but it’s the music that talks.”
Peter Erskine and John Patitucci have also raked up an impressive music CV. Peter has performed on over 400 albums, many which are his own and hear his work on both Austin Powers’ movie soundtracks. John too has featured on a fair number of movie soundtracks, working alongside top film composers Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams as well as artists like Bon Jovi, BB King and Sting to name but a few.
“Pete Erskine is the complete musician in so many ways and has collaborated most recently with Evelyn Glennie and Kate Bush,” adds Svend. “He and Scofield go back a long way - they understand each other superbly musically.”
“And John Patitucci, well what can I say about a musician who is equally at home with a string quartet and Bon Jovi. He's a titan.”
These three players don't get together that often - it is a meeting of greats and will be a memorable night.
