Kingussie based film maker nominated for 'DepicT' film award
19 October 2005

It has just been announced that Kingussie based film maker Helen Graham has been nominated for the prestigious ‘DepicT! Short Film Award’ as part of the ‘Brief Encounters 11th Bristol International Short Film Festival 2005’ .

Her 90 second film ‘Margalida Mirando (Margalida Watching)’ was inspired by a trip to visit her daughter who lives in rural Mallorca. She was invited to a ‘Matanza’ (pig killing) by her extended family and decided to capture on film this traditional event that is sadly dying out. Her quirky and thought provoking short film was incredibly well received by the judging panel.

Helen directed, produced and filmed this film herself. Other screenings include ‘Scottish Beauty’, a collaboration, screened at the UGC Cinema, Edinburgh as part of the Channel 4 Ideasfactory launch, and ‘Knitting for Peace’ screened by Undercurrents at the European Creative Forum in London

DepicT! 2005 - the short film competition for micro movies of under 90 seconds has proved hugely successful this year with a record number of over 320 entries from across the globe, 10 of which have been short-listed for the award.

The DepicT! 2005 winner will be presented with their award at the ‘Brief Encounters Bristol International Short Film Festival’ which takes place from Wednesday 23rd - Sunday 27th November 2005. The judges for this year's competition will be announced shortly. In previous years judges have included ‘Lord Of The Rings’ director Peter Jackson, prominent British actor Pete Postlethwaite, and ex Monty Python turned film director Terry Gilliam.

Short-listed entries are now posted online on www.depict.org  and Orange World. To vote for Helen’s film, you can text DEPICT 6 to 2472 (restricted to Orange customers only) or head for www.lovefilm.com  where you can vote online.
