Ullapool will resound to the sounds of music making in August when the Edinburgh Quartet will be in residence there from 6-13 August 2005 as part of NYOS Variations – Making Chamber Music in Scotland, launched earlier this year by the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland.
More of a summer break than a summer school, NYOS Variations aims to bring together musicians of all ages and abilities to make music, with the Edinburgh Quartet at hand throughout the week to guide and coach. Participants can take time out to enjoy the fabulous environment of Wester Ross and take part in outdoor activities such as walking, climbing, canoeing and sea kayaking. And in the evening, there will be a variety of concerts to enjoy, including concerts by the Edinburgh Quartet itself.
Even if you aren’t lucky enough to be taking part in the summer school, you will still be able to see and hear the Quartet around Ullapool during the week. They will be giving public concerts on Tuesday 9 and Thursday 11 August at the Macphail Centre, when you can hear romantic music by the Scottish composer, J B McEwen, alongside better known quartets by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Beethoven.
There’s still time to sign up for NYOS Variations and special discounts available for students and group bookings. If you’re interested, contact Helen Jamieson now on
