Sacred Harp Singing Day at Resolis Hall
03 June 2005

Resolis Community Arts is holding another Singing Day on Saturday June 11 at Resolis Hall on the Black Isle from 10.00 until 4.30. The style of singing is called Sacred Harp but don't worry, it's not sacred and you definitely don't need a harp!

Sacred Harp singing has its origins in 18th century New England, and is rooted in earlier musical traditions brought over by settlers from Britain . It is powerful, rhythmic and folky, written for unaccompanied performance in three and four parts. The lines are easy to learn by ear for people who don't have music reading skills. Texts are of a religious nature, equally powerful and often poetic, and can be enjoyed by singers of any persuasion, or none at all.

You don't have to be a trained singer, or even to have sung in a choir before, to enjoy taking part in Sacred Harp singing. So long as you can carry a tune you will have a great time. Sacred Harp gatherings are still held in parts of America (The Sacred Harp is the name of the hymnal where these pieces are collected). People spend the day enjoying their favourite songs and socialising. Our day in Resolis will follow the same pattern, so please bring a picnic lunch.

The session is lead by Bob Pegg. Bob is a musician and storyteller, known in Ross-shire as an arts worker for the Highland Council. He began his musical career back in the 1970s as a recording artist and leader of the iconic folk rock band Mr Fox. In the '80s he was, among other things, writer in residence in Cleveland, organiser of the Legal and General Songsearch songwriting competition, and one half of the performance duo, The Beasties. During the 1990s Bob wrote the music for the community dramas Macbeth and Storm and organised many musical and storytelling events in the Highlands. For the past decade and more he has led Sacred Harp singing workshops in Ross-shire, at the Edinburgh Harp Festival, and at Celtic Connections in Glasgow.

For more information or to book your place (cost for the day is £10 -£7 concession which includes tea and coffee) please phone David Gilbert 01381 610204 or Kenny Taylor 01349 877625
